Understanding the Blessings of Water and Energy
Water holds immense significance, especially for those who endure days without it. Constituting about 70-80% of the human body, water is essential for all living beings. It supports agriculture, gardens, and the entire ecosystem. This sacred element brings freshness and growth, as reflected in various Quranic verses highlighting its importance.
The scarcity of water is a global issue. Some regions face extreme shortages, especially during summer, forcing people to consume contaminated water. In Islam, the importance of water conservation is strongly emphasized. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) advised against wasting water even if one is by a flowing river, setting an example for mindful consumption.
Similarly, energy, particularly electricity, is another critical resource often taken for granted. It powers our daily activities and is fundamental to modern life. Excessive use and wastage of energy lead to depletion of resources and environmental harm. Islam encourages the prudent use of resources, urging believers to avoid extravagance in all forms.
Islamic Teachings on Conservation
Islamic teachings emphasize the conservation of water and energy through various practices and guidelines. One notable example is the way Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) performed ablution and bathing, using minimal amounts of water. This practice serves as a model for Muslims to follow, promoting the conservation of water even during religious rituals.
“Do not waste water even if you perform your Ablution on the banks of an abundantly flowing river.”
Hadith of Prophet Muhammad PBUH (Sunan Ibn Majah)
There is a Hadith narrated by Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that illustrates the minimal use of water by the Prophet (peace be upon him). He would perform Ghusl (full-body ritual purification) with one Sa’ (approximately 2.5 liters) of water and Wudu (partial ablution) with one Mudd (approximately 0.625 liters) of water. This example highlights the importance of using water judiciously.
Also, The Quran reminds us to cherish the blessings we have and to avoid excess in their use. This guidance is crucial in today’s world where energy conservation is paramount.
“And eat and drink, but be not excessive. Indeed, Allah doesn’t like those who commit excess.”
Holy Quran (7:31)
Responsibility Towards Blessings
“You will be asked about the blessings you enjoy.”
Holy Quran (102:8)
This verse serves as a reminder that we are accountable for how we use the blessings bestowed upon us. Water & Energy are such blessing, and it is our duty to use them wisely and responsibly. Wasteful use of them not only depletes resources but also contributes to environmental degradation, which goes against the principles of stewardship in Islam.
